Antifouling | Naphthenic Acid, ECOS, VALIREX
Naphthenic Acid, Driers and Anti-Skinning for High-Performance Anti-Corrosion & Antifouling Coatings
Umicore has many years of manufacturing experience as a metal carboxylate and naphthenic acid supplier, with the largest distillation unit in Europe. As a trusted partner to the marine industry, we work closely with our customers to provide them with the best antifouling formulation. We offer a broad range of reliable and competitive chemicals for paints & coatings, including drier chemicals, anti-skinning agents and naphthenic acid for marine coatings.
Choosing the right drier, anti-skinning agent and naphthenic acid is crucial to ensure compatibility with the other components of the antifouling coating and the substrate. The type of chemical ingredients needed will also vary depending on the specific application and the type of marine organisms that need to be controlled. Making a well-informed selection will help ensure the success of your project.
Naphthenic Acid - Natural Acids for Marine Antifouling Agents with Protective Properties
Naphthenic acid, derived from crude oil, is biodegradable and does not accumulate in the environment, making it a sustainable option. Our product is an ideal choice for eco-friendly marine coatings. Antifouling coatings are formulated with naphthenic acid, preventing marine organisms from growing on the hull of ships and boats.

Primary, Secondary and Auxiliary Driers/Siccatives for Marine Coatings
Primary Driers/Siccatives - Cobalt Polymer Technology
Note that regulatory developments cast doubt on the future use of traditional cobalt driers, like cobalt octoate. To address this uncertainty, we have created our ECOS portfolio based on patented technology. ECOS products incorporate metal into a polymeric structure, restricting its bio-accessibility. This offers a safe solution, without compromising on drying performance.

ECOS ND 15 | Cobalt polymer drier with 4% metal content. | |
ECOS ND 15 Aqua | Cobalt polymer drier with 3.5% metal content. Suitable for water-based applications. |
|
ECOS Mix T285 Neo D60 | Cobalt polymer mix drier with calcium and zirconium, diluted in a dearomatized hydrocarbon mixture with a flash point of 60° C. |
Primary Driers/Siccatives - Traditional Cobalt Driers & Mix Driers
Cobalt carboxylates are the most effective oxidation catalysts at ambient temperatures. Cobalt driers produce fast surface drying to the film.
VALIREX Co 10 D60 | Cobalt octoate drier with 10% metal content, diluted in a dearomatized hydrocarbon mixture with a flash point of 60° C. |
|
VALIREX Co 6 Zr 9 D60 | Cobalt octoate mix drier with zirconium, diluted in a dearomatized hydrocarbon mixture with a flash point of 60° C. |
Secondary Driers/Siccatives - Zirconium Driers
Zirconium carboxylates improve the through-dry of auto-oxidative drying systems. They are often used in combination with cobalt and calcium carboxylates.
VALIREX Zr 12 D60 | Zirconium octoate drier with 12% metal content, diluted in a dearomatized hydrocarbon mixture with a flash point of 60° C. |
|
VALIREX Zr 12 Neo PR D60 | Zirconium neodecanoate drier with 12% metal content, diluted in a dearomatized hydrocarbon mixture with a flash point of 60° C. |
|
VALIREX Zr 18 D60 | Zirconium octoate drier with 18% metal content, diluted in a dearomatized hydrocarbon mixture with a flash point of 60° C. |
|
VALIREX Zr 18 Neo PR D60 | Zirconium neodecanoate drier with 18% metal content, diluted in a dearomatized hydrocarbon mixture with a flash point of 60° C. |
|
VALIREX Zr 24 D60 | Zirconium octoate drier with 24% metal content, diluted in a dearomatized hydrocarbon mixture with a flash point of 60° C. |
Auxiliary Driers/Siccatives - Calcium Driers & Zinc Driers
Calcium carboxylates are popular driers and very useful in combination with active driers like cobalt. Calcium driers help to improve hardness and gloss, as well as to reduce skin-formation, silking and blooming. They are also valuable as pigment wetting/dispersing agents and loss-of-dry inhibitors.
VALIREX Ca 5 N D60 | Calcium octoate drier with 5% metal content, diluted in a dearomatized hydrocarbon mixture with a flash point of 60° C. |
|
VALIREX Ca 5 N Neo D60 | Calcium neodecanoate drier with 5% metal content, diluted in a dearomatized hydrocarbon mixture with a flash point of 60° C. |
|
VALIREX Ca 10 OB D60 | Calcium carboxylate drier with 10% metal content (octoate-free), diluted in a dearomatized hydrocarbon mixture with a flash point of 60° C. |
Zinc carboxylates keep auto-oxidative films “open” by slowing down the cobalt drier, thus permitting hardening throughout the coating. They are very effective as wetting/pigment-dispersing agents and have the additional benefit of inhibiting mildew formation in coatings and improving gloss levels.
VALIREX Zn 8 D60 | Zinc octoate drier with 8% metal content, diluted in a dearomatized hydrocarbon mixture with a flash point of 60° C. |
|
VALIREX Zn 12 D60 | Zinc octoate drier with 12% metal content, diluted in a dearomatized hydrocarbon mixture with a flash point of 60° C. |
|
VALIREX Zn 16 Neo D60 | Zinc neodecanoate drier with 16% metal content, diluted in a dearomatized hydrocarbon mixture with a flash point of 60° C. |
|
VALIREX Zn 22 | Zinc octoate drier with 22% metal content. |
