Technical Young Graduate Program (TYGP)
Umicore is looking for masters in Engineering and (applied) sciences, to join in its Technical Young Graduates Program (TYGP). With this program, Umicore prepares starting engineers for a clearly predefined management position in a technical field. Required skills differ depending on the hiring business unit, but all TYG’s will be coached during a specifically designed development program spread over different units and locations worldwide. As a TYG you will be given the opportunity to develop your personal and professional knowledge, skills and network, by attending Umicore seminars and networking events. During the entire TYGP, an experienced mentor supports you.
The Technical Young Graduate program focuses on learning through experience. This is further supported by a dedicated learning track in order to boost your personal development. It consists of 4 residential courses: Teamwork & Communication, Presentation skills, Personal Effectiveness and Project Management. By connecting to colleagues in similar roles throughout the program, you will capitalize on each other’s learning.
Depending on the hiring business unit, required profiles and skills can differ. At the moment, we are looking for 4 Technical Young Graduates for the units Cobalt & Specialty Materials, Rechargeable Battery Materials and Umicore Precious Metals Refining.
Hiring Unit – Cobalt & Specialty Materials (CSM)
Umicore Cobalt & Specialty Materials is a worldwide leader in the recycling, refining, transformation and marketing of cobalt and nickel specialty chemicals. We cover all the steps of the value chain, form sourcing to distribution, with production units and sales offices on all continents. Our broad knowledge and expertise covers a multitude of applications in both chemicals and powder metallurgy.
For the business unit Cobalt & Specialty Materials, Umicore is looking for young bilingual Chinese-English Chemical or Material Engineering graduates with a keen interest for technology, industrial equipment and plant operations. The TYG is willing to travel and has the flexibility to relocate to Umicore’s Chinese Refining Operations located in the Guangdong and Jiangxi province. We are looking for TYG with a strong team spirit, an open and motivating communication style, strong analytical skills and who are focused on results, committed, flexible and have a positive ‘can do’ spirit.
At the start of the Technical Young Graduate Program, a specific-tailor made traineeship program will be drawn up, depending on the background and interest of the TYG. In the following paragraph, you can find an exemple of a possible traineeship program.
During your training period as a TYG you will initially be offered projects in your field of expertise on the Umicore site of Olen (Belgium). You are expected to contribute to productivity, quality and process improvements in our Cobalt & Nickel refineries.
After an initial 6 months period in our Group Research and Development department to get acquainted with the extractive metallurgy of cobalt and nickel and solvent extraction technology, you will move through two or three other positions you will be holding over the course of the program.
In these 4 to 6 month period you will be part of the cobalt refinery staff, the nickel refinery staff and the maintenance and asset management department where you will assist in the optimization projects an in capital expenditure programs.
To prepare you to meet international management challenges an assignment in one of our operations outside Belgium might be included in the last part of the program.
- Assistant Project Manager @ Umicore’s Chinese Refining Operations in Guangdong or Jiangxi
After the traineeship, you are assigned to the position of Assistant Project Manager, where as part of the local Umicore team, you will be involved in the current expansion projects. Depending on the phase of the project(s) when your assignment start, this might include tasks as follow up of detailed engineering and construction, support during start-up, collecting and analyzing production, quality and environmental data, development of reporting schemes, determination of bottlenecks etc. In all these aspects analyzing and reporting the current situation is one of your responsibilities as is the proposal of improvements in efficiency or robustness of the process.
